India’s Comparison before Independence
Well if we talk about India, it was the wealthiest country or an empire early 16th and 17th century before Britishers came to rule. In 17th century British traders showed their real face by defeating Indian rulers and started ruling the kingdom under them. They successfully established their East India Company. They increased taxes, created racism between the people India. And a time came when whole India became colony of British Empire. They used to buy cotton, indigo, spices etc. at very low cost and sell them in other European countries at very expensive cost. They aimed at the peoples’ unity and started dividing the people. This became easier for them to rule over us. The main division by them were between Hindus and Muslims community which resulted in the partition of India and Pakistan.
During the British rule we can categorise people in two forms:
Revolutionary
Some people believed that the country should be free from British rule. They formed groups and started fighting against the British Government in their own way for their own region. With the guidance of mass leaders they were standing as soldiers to push out the British rule from the country. We have read about ‘Revolt of 1857’ the first revolution against the British rule. Although the revolution was not successful to push out the rule but it gave spark to many leaders who later on came forward to serve.
Revolt of 1857
Revolt of 1857 was not enough to get the Independence as the people were not united. They were fighting to free up their own region not for the whole country. They were spread out in small groups all over the country so it was easy for British Government to finish them up. This was the important point due to which it failed. Also different leaders gave different theory, different ideology, and methods to get independence. This also created diversity and the revolt failed.
Types of Revolutions*
On the basis of the methods and ideology and we categorise the revolutions into three parts:
Non- revolutionary
The non-revoltionary people were the ones who didn’t participate in India’s freedom. These were gain categorised as:
People who wanted to be the part of the revoltion but didn’t have guidance of any leader.
People who were working for the British Government and were payed for it and didn’t wanted to go against their owners.
People who were afraid to get killed.
Major point is the people were not partial supporting. Some where these people also helped by working as spies, and somewhere they were also working as supplier of food, water, medicines, etc. Also there were some good people in British army too who really helped us to get our freedom and wanted the peace.
*Types of revolution will be discussed seprately in detail.
